Demystifying Postpartum Depression

Congratulations! You Are a New Mom

You've looked forward to this day for many years. The room is ready, the clothes are washed and folded, and the hospital bag is packed. You have read every book out there and consulted with your friends, family, and even strangers to gather all the information you can regarding what to expect. You've got this!

Unexpected Emotions

And then the moment is finally here. Your baby has arrived. Everyone around you is so happy and excited so how is it that you are having feelings of sadness, depression, or anxiety? This was not on the agenda.

Postpartum Depression Looks Different for Everyone!

When discussing postpartum depression, it is important to keep in mind the wide range of experiences women may have. This ranges from baby blues to postpartum depression and anxiety.

The symptoms of baby blues usually last about two weeks and are very common. They appear as mild moments of sadness or short-term periods of feeling blue. Feelings of overwhelm are often present. More severe, persistent versions of these symptoms fall in the category of postpartum depression or postpartum anxiety. This may show up in bouts of tears throughout the day, feelings of disconnect from your newborn, or longer periods of irritation just to name a few.

Postpartum Psychosis

Postpartum psychosis is not postpartum depression. Postpartum psychosis is a very rare but very serious condition that can cause confusion, delusions, and/or obsessive thoughts. Postpartum psychosis can lead to life-threatening thoughts or behaviors which require immediate attention by a medical professional.

These conditions left untreated can cause major disruptions for moms and babies. The good news is that treatment and support are out there.

Steps to Help Overcome Postpartum Depression

There are several steps you can take to get back on track to a healthy lifestyle that supports you and your baby.

Lack of Sleep Can Impact Postpartum Depression

For many, sleepless nights is the norm when bringing home a newborn. Consider taking shifts with your partner or bring in a family member or friend who is willing to provide a night of support so that you can catch up on needed rest. Consider the idea of napping when your baby naps during the day when and if you are able.

Hire a Postpartum Doula

Postpartum care is about creating a healthy and holistic environment that supports your baby and you. Having a postpartum doula will provide opportunities for physical and emotional nourishment as you bond with your baby and come into your new role. Doulas can assist with basic baby care, help with breast and/or bottle feeding and provide tips and tricks for soothing, sleeping, and feeding all with unconditional and nonjudgemental support. Some doulas even help with light, healthy meal preparation as well as light housework, dishes, and baby laundry.

Talk to a Therapist About Therapy for Depression

Talking to a therapist can be helpful in finding ways to better respond to the changes around new motherhood.  Experiences from our own past and the ways we were raised can also feel relevant at this time. Relationships with our partners and/or other family members may begin to feel strained. Through therapy, you can create a safe place to explore ways to cope as well as provide an opportunity to express some of the many feelings that come along with this life-changing event. At Lotus Psychotherapy our skilled team of therapists work with new mothers to overcome these challenges!

Join a Mommy Group

Some of the greatest friendships are forged when we connect with others who are experiencing similar life transitions. Gathering with other new moms is a great way to start to build more structure in your routine and find support. Being part of a group allows us to gain perspective and insight. New mommy groups often touch upon issues related to feeding, sleeping, soothing, and playing, as well as maternal self-care. It can provide a place to explore who we are as new mothers and discuss the feelings which are universal in nature and are part of the new motherhood experience.

Get Out and Move

It is important to get outside with your baby and breathe in some fresh air. Whether it be taking a leisurely walk with your baby in the stroller or sneaking away alone for a yoga class, movement is key to staying healthy both physically and mentally.

While this is a really exciting time in your life, remember that it is okay if it isn’t “picture perfect”. Most women have struggled during this adjustment, whether it be baby blues or some form of postpartum depression. Remember, you are not alone and there is help available.
