Teen Anxiety Surrounding Graduation and Next Steps
Along with the many stressors teens are already facing on the day to day, graduating high school and moving on to life's next steps can be at the forefront of those stressors. Whether you are planning on attending college, going into the workforce, or taking some time off, all of these options come with anxiety and uncertainty about what’s to come next.
Some aspects to remember during this phase of life:
Remembering that everyone has their own path.
With societal pressure, many teens can feel as though there is a “right” or “wrong” path. This narrative can be harmful. It is important to remember that everyone’s path is different and the only “wrong” path is a path that you don’t feel any enjoyment through. It can be hard not to give in to social pressure, and/or what our friends or family are doing, so focusing on your own path can sometimes take a bit of unlearning and conscious effort.
How do I find my own path?
There can be many cliches said about trying to find your own path, but most of these cliches end up leading to the same focal point; think about what in your life makes you the happiest/where you feel the most fulfilled. This can feel like general advice, but it is in our interests where we find the most fulfillment. What are your strengths? Are you a people person? Do you like to work alone? Do you like animals? Are you creative? The list of questions can be exhaustive, but it is important to really take the time to think about what questions you need to ask yourself.
Make time for all life aspects and be present.
With all of this being said, it is important to remember that career steps are not the only aspect of life to focus on. Entering into this next phase of life, you will continue to discover who you are, what you enjoy, your beliefs, your passions, meet new people, have new experiences and so much more. It is important to pour into all of these life aspects, as a fulfilling life is a balanced life.
You are not behind. Everyone is trying to figure this out for themselves.
It’s a natural human tendency to compare ourselves to others, and let’s be real, social media doesn't make this tendency any easier. It is normal to look at our peers and feel as though we are behind, not doing enough, etc. This narrative can be very harmful and can make you feel as though your accomplishments aren’t enough. Celebrating your wins and reminding yourself of the previous point, that you are on your own path, is imperative when these comparison beliefs start to show up.
